On the one hand, that brought me back to the Golden toto slot Age of Xbox Live; on the other, it sucks that that was literally the first thing another Rematch player ever said to me. Sometimes you’ll get great players who are really supportive. And then you’ll get dudes of all skill levels ready to dredge up slurs that people haven’t heard since the 1800s. Even worse, if you find a group you like in Quick Play, there’s no way to… rematch with your teammates. If you want to experience one of the best co-op games of all time on the Switch 2, then Split Fiction is the title for you.

Outlaws’ combat serves up some solid cover-based shooting with authentic sounds and punchy smoke-and-spark effects with each blaster bolt impact, but precious little in the way of new ideas – it’s less Bad Batch and more basic bitch. There’s always the challenge of knowing when to detonate them to take out the most enemies, but that’s the same thing we’ve been doing for decades, so while it’s effective, it doesn’t make Outlaws’ combat stand out. Yakuza 0 has an amazing story, but is also filled with charming and silly side-quests that keep you smiling in between heavy story reveals. The beat ’em up gameplay is also uber satisfying as you hit combos and plummet enemies into the dirt. However, the big standout here is that the Director’s Cut offers new cut scenes and English voice-overs.

That means if you want to lob a pass to a teammate to your left, you have to push the analog stick in that direction when you attempt the pass. If you want to push the ball in a direction, you push the analog stick in that direction as you press the button to push, regardless of which way you’re facing. You can even curve your shots by using the stick as you’re shooting to find the weak spot in a goalie’s defense.

But while this is a very good game, with time I came to understand that its ambitions are a touch more humble than some recent genre heavyweights. I realised that it might be more flattering to think of Avowed as a choice-based narrative-driven action game. Or, as a certain kind of simplified blockbuster RPG that is fast receding in the medium’s rearview mirror. Where Outlaws’ quest design really excels, though, is in taking seemingly innocuous side objectives and spinning them out into exciting, multi-staged adventures that regularly took me by surprise.

Speeder bike combat is even more restrictive, although it does serve as the best source of unintentional comedy that you can find in Outlaws. By that same token, I got plenty of laughs from speeding headlong towards cliff faces, pumping the brakes at the last second, and watching my pursuers blaze right by me and smear themselves against the escarpment. So at least speeder combat seemed as perilous for them as it did for me. Basically, even if you’ve played Street Fighter 6 before, there is a ton of new content to explore with Nintendo’s fresh version of this 2023 masterpiece. You’ll have to explore, solve puzzles, and fight enemies in turn-based combat.
