It’s a fun feeling to tell the players you’ve spent a few points on something wicked, then watch them sweat for a few moments before you reveal what it is. The skill ceiling in Rematch seems almost limitless, and I just know that pro-level players are going to put together some incredible Messi-like passages of play, making the rest of us look like Ali Dia (kudos to you, if you got that reference). But rather than this high level of mechanical complexity being off-putting, it’s a huge part of the reason I desperately want to play more.

These sidequests shouldn’t be missed, and in truth cannot be, because focusing on the main quest at the expense of the XP and steady upgrade materials they provide probably won’t be feasible for most players. 2024 was a good year for popular game series making big returns. Tekken 8 kicked off the year — literally — with its newest installment, which we called an “incredible evolution for the series” thanks to some interesting changes made to the classic 3D fighter that breathes new life into the classic combat. Arrowhead Game Studios’ fun and hilarious shooter was the big breakout hit of the year, quickly enlisting millions of new recruits for its galactic space war. Even though it stumbled with some recent updates, it remains a massively popular game and PlayStation’s big live-service win of the year.

So long as there’s no drought of big game releases—like there were in the dark GameCube and Wii U days—Nintendo may just “1-Up” itself with the Switch 2. Nintendo wanted GameChat to be such a defining feature on Switch 2 that it put a “C” button on all its first-party controllers. The button allows you to quickly send or receive calls and change video settings without going to the main menu. You can only send calls to friends over Switch Online, and you need to provide a phone number when you first try the feature.

I never felt constrained as the GM by Fear, knowing that I could save up a stack to make the final combat more epic. For those groups who want a little more guidance, there are a handful of campaign frames as examples of settings where Daggerheart shines. There are a few fantasy ones but the genres also dip into technomagical science fiction and weird westerns. They also contain some rules that groups can use for their original worlds, such as cooking monsters, crafting weapons and gear and adding firearms into the mix. Here, external walls and flooring all snap together nicely, while the inside of your home requires a bit more finicky work to get things to fit just right. If you do run into problems, the system itself is quite forgiving, and it’s easy enough to modify your floor plan to fit more appliances if things get a little tight.
